The Road to Wellness

You don’t have to be sick to see your doctor!

Yep, you can toss out the familiar adage, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” (Ok, so you can keep your apple, but skip that last part.)

That’s right. These days, medical philosophy has changed! You and your doc are supposed to be partners now – both dedicated toward the single goal of getting – and keeping – you in tip-top physical health!

It’s no longer about waiting until you’re hurt or ill and seeking treatment. It’s about the promotion of good habits and the prevention of disease.

But wait! There’s more!

The same is true for… drum roll, please… your therapist!

Mental health is about just that, your health. In fact, it’s a significant component of your overall health.

And just like caring for your physical condition, tending to your mental wellness – before you become clinically unwell – offers many benefits.

Perhaps you need space to process your daily life. Or a different perspective?

Perhaps your expectations of emotions, health, and wellness are askew.

Just as “every body” is different, so is “everybody” – including you.

If you thought you had diabetes, or a heart problem, or appendicitis, or a broken arm, you’d make an appointment to see your doctor without a second thought. Without attention, those things can get much worse – even life-threatening – before or if they get better.

You wouldn’t let a friend or family member perform an appendectomy or attempt to set your fractured humerus by yourself – you’d want an experienced expert to supervise your care.

You don’t have to navigate mental health concerns all alone, either. Whatever’s troubling you, we’ll sort through it – together.

Who couldn’t benefit from an hour a week dedicated entirely to mental self-care?

You might be amazed at how transformative focusing on mental wellness can be.

Just ask,

Julissa (she/her)

Doing It Right

Since childhood, Julissa had simply “known” there was a right way and a wrong way to do everything.

And she was determined to do things the right way.

For as long as she could remember, she’d felt stressed.

Doing It All

Julissa had always felt in direct connection with her achievements, spanning from daily activities (home, work, personal life, and her role as a wife) to larger themes (attaining her goals, coming out, working twice as hard for respect and equality).

With the entire array constantly running through her brain, she could never fully relax.

For Julissa, the list of things she should and must do expanded continually – her human capacity to complete them… did not.

Bearing It All

Eventually, she began to feel like Atlas, carrying the weight of the world’s burdens on her shoulders.

Each day had devolved into nothing more than an assembly line through which she rushed from one obligation to the next.

Perpetually exhausted by the insurmountable pressures, she rarely ever experienced any guilt-free joy. According to her wife, even if Julissa were to win the lottery, she’d be so stressed she wouldn’t invest properly.

Finally, at her wife’s suggestion, Julissa came to counseling.

Re-Evaluating It All

In therapy, we explored the source of Julissa’s expectations around the concepts of should and must. She realized the words themselves held no innate truth.

They simply represented relearned beliefs and behaviors she could either continue to carry – or put down.

Releasing It All

When Julissa differentiated successfully between choices and necessities, she cast an enormous weight off her shoulders.

She gained a greater sense of control over her life and allowed herself to make decisions based on free will. Moreover, she let go of the false judgments she had formed about herself.

Julissa’s ability to do so relieved much of the pressure she felt and allowed her to savor the simple pleasures in life again.

And so can you.

It’s time to get to know one another.
